Why is it called “butterfly valve”?

Mar 11,2021

Among all types of valves, there is a particular one with the most beautiful name—the butterfly valve. How did the name come from? In answering this question, we could use analogy. For example, the ball valve looks like a ball, so can we guess that the butterfly valve looks like a butterfly? Well, it seems a little funny, but I have to say: “Bingo, right answer!”

The butterfly valve is a regulating valve with simple structure, and it can be used for switching control of a low pressure pipeline medium. The opening and closing member (valve or disc) of the butterfly valve is a disc that rotates around the valve shaft to open and close. In the cylindrical passage of the butterfly valve body, the disc rotates about the axis to achieve flow control. The valve is fully open when the disc reaches 90°, and changing the angle of the disc can adjust the flow of the medium.

Double Flanged High Performance Double Offset Butterfly Valve

When the butterfly valve is fully open, it has a small flow resistance; when it is between about 15° and 70°, it can perform better flow control. Therefore, the butterfly valve is widely used in the field of large diameter adjustment. Most butterfly valves are available for media with suspended solid particles. Depending on the strength of the seal, it can also be used in powdered and granular media.

FEID AVALVE is the top ranking China double offset butterfly valve manufacture. The annual output of high performance butterfly valve is more than 100,000,000 set.

The API 607 fire safe high performance butterfly valve is also in FEIDA VALVE product range. Our fire safe butterfly valve is certificated by American Petroleum Institute (API) according to API 607 standards.

FEIDA also build up a dustless workshop to produce ultra-clean valve for some critical working condition such as nuclear industry, semiconductor industry etc.

In the dustless workshop, FEIDA also produce the food-grade valves. FEIDA food-grade valve is certificated by Food and Drug Administration United States (FDA).
